Last year was a busy one for me and with most of it spent focused on buying a new house and moving to a different town, it meant even less time for video games than usual. It’s only now that things are starting to settle down and we glide into 2017 that I realise how little I actually played and wrote. I’ve picked up several titles I’ve not yet had a chance to play in the latest Steam sale (Oxenfree and Firewatch are up first) but it still feels as if I’ve got a long way to go before I catch up.
Some might say that the lack of time I put aside for gaming during 2016 could be a sign that I’m going off my hobby but the truth is, I’ve missed it. I want to get lost in the snowy mountains of Winterhold, be the hero in Albion, misbehave in Los Santos – and find new worlds to explore too. It’s just the way life is: sometimes you have to take care of ‘grown-up’ responsibilities, and at other points you have a few precious hours to blow up a horde of zombies and save the world from impending doom.
I was discussing New Year’s resolutions with my other half recently and we’ve come up with a simple one for 2017: to play more video games. At first it sounds like a silly, throwaway objective but it’s one that has more meaning behind it; gaming can be a way of spending time with family, getting together with friends, and making sure you have time for yourself even during the busiest periods. Pete and I won’t necessarily have more free hours than we did last year, and house renovations and a new job starting this month are going to make sticking to our resolution even harder, but we’re going to make more of an effort to turn on the PC or PlayStation whenever we have the opportunity.
Judging by the flood of ‘most anticipated games’ articles published on gaming websites recently, it seems as if we’ve got a lot of releases to potentially play over the next 12 months. There’s no way we’re going to get around to playing them all – or even as many as we’d ideally like – so I’ve started to think about those I don’t want to miss out on this year. The list below should hopefully provide some focus for our resolution and help us see it through to the end of 2017…
|Detroit: Become Human||Quantic Dream|
|Finding Paradise||Freebird Games|
|The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild||Nintendo|
|Mass Effect: Andromeda||BioWare|
|Prey for the Gods||No Matter Studios|
|Tacoma||The Fullbright Company|
|What Remains of Edith Finch||Giant Sparrow|
With a little bit of luck, this time next year I’ll be able to say that I’ve managed to complete all of the games above (provided they’re released on time) and am no longer living in a house which resembles a building site (not entirely likely). Whatever your resolutions are, I hope you have a happy New Year and all your dreams come true in 2017. 🎉
