It’s that time again: the question of the month is back and will see us attempt to answer a quandary that has been puzzling the gaming community since it first brought it on like Donkey Kong. We’re going up against our friends and blogging neighbours in order to find the ultimate response in less than 100 words – and we’re asking you to choose the winner by voting in our poll.
But first, let’s take a look at last month’s question and find out who won!

September’s question: who’s the most memorable video game NPC?
Non-player characters (NPCs) add colour to a game’s world and every now again, one comes along who’s a little different from the rest: they make us sit up and take notice when they speak (even if they only have one line). But which NPC deserves to receive just as much fame and adoration as their protagonist counterpart? Let’s reveal our contenders for the September 2017 trophy…
Answer 1: Taj the Genie from Diddy Kong Racing
Answer 2: Cranky Kong from Donkey Kong Country
Answer 3: Shouty Guard from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Chris from OverThinker Y says: “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has very few NPCs, because the game opens with almost everyone being turned into horrifying sand beasts. Yet somehow, one of the royal guard, locked in a room with a really weird puzzle, survived, and this man was forever etched into legend as The Guy With The Best Voice Of All Time. His only role in the game is to bellow orders at the Prince in what I can only describe as the greatest and best-acted scene of all time. If you ever played this game, you remember this guy.”
Answer 4: The Merchant from Resident Evil 4
Answer 5: Moneybags from Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!
Answer 6: The Announcer from Team Fortress 2
Answer 7: Murray the Skull from The Curse of Monkey Island
Kim from Later Levels says: “Murray may have had his skeletal-body blown to pieces by a cannon but did he let that hold him back? No. Many would have been crushed by this tragic accident but he turned it into the opportunity he’d been waiting for: to become a demonic overlord and conquer the land of the living. Despite his reduced state, he still considers himself to be an object of pure evil and dreams of spreading chaos throughout the Caribbean – showing that sometimes all you need is a positive mental attitude. This is one skull who’s got his s**t together and is going places.”
Answer 8: The Old Man from The Legend of Zelda
Athena from AmbiGaming says: “The Old Man from the original The Legend of Zelda taught us something very important: it’s dangerous to go alone. Every hero needs a good NPC to back them up, and the Old Man is the epitome of this: he doesn’t know Link from Adam, yet dispenses advice and a weapon to help the hero on his quest. And even though his lines are few, his legacy is long! Not only has this recognizable and memorable NPC from 1986 been immortalized as a meme, but is seen ubiquitously on t-shirts, mugs, and more. No other NPC can boast such staying power!”
Answer 9: Zelda from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
NekoJonez from NekoJonez’s Gaming Blog says: “The character of Zelda in the series has been quite something. In various games, she is a damsel-in-distress that needs to be saved each title. Yet, in Breath of the Wild, she is defending Hyrule from total destruction. Without aging for some strange reason. I really liked Zelda in the latest title. She is more human than in previous games, and I like that. Truth to be told, I think that the Zelda from Skyward Sword is a close second.”
Answer 10: Navi from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
So who’s got it right, and who’s got it so wrong that they deserved to be cast in the role of an NPC for the rest of eternity? Place your votes in the poll opposite or give your own suggestion in the comments below, and we’ll reveal the most popular answer on Friday, 06 October 2017 along with the next question.
