Question of the Month: September 2018 edition
It’s time for a new Question of the Month, one which will see us attempt to answer a quandary that has been puzzling the gaming community since they were distracted by a three-headed monkey standing behind them. But first let’s find out who won August’s challenge!
The winner
Last month, Brandon from That Green Dude asked: Many of us say that we would like to live in a video game world but surely we would have a family. My question is, which video game characters would be a part of your family in a gaming world of your choice? He reviewed all the answers submitted in response and here’s his judgement:
“The winner is The Gaming Diaries. I loved her choices for her world and family. I’ve never played Stardew Valley but I keep hearing that its setting is tranquil. I also like that she chose Bayek as her father. I’ve played Assassin’s Creed Origins and I love Bayek. His time as a father was sadly cut short due to events in the game and I think he deserves to be a dad again.
“I would like to thank everyone who answered the question, all the answers were great and a delight to read.”
Congratulations to The Gaming Diaries and thank you to everyone who joined in with August’s question! Now let’s find out more about our latest star blogger along with the challenge they’ve set us for September 2018.
The blogger
It’s the man of the moment and all-round awesome guy: here’s Ian from Adventure Rules! He may be from the state of Kentucky in the United States but you shouldn’t expect any ‘fowl’ posts from his site (that was my poor attempt at KFC humour). Instead he’ll bring you amazing posts on the subjects of both video and tabletop games, from reviews to news to reactions to guides, along with a few well-loved community events thrown in for good measure.
You may have heard of Ian recently through this year’s Blogger Blitz, an annual writing competition hosted over on Adventure Rules that’s just about to begin the semi-finals. I have the pleasure of being involved as a judge after competing last time and I have to say the quality of entries is extremely high! These events take an awful lot of organisation to pull off and it’s all thanks to Ian’s hard work, so make sure you give him a follow on Twitter to stay up-to-date on the results.
A fan of Nintendo games, this blogger enjoys titles that tell an engaging story or require strategic thinking and his preferred series include The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon and Fire Emblem. Although his favourite post keeps changing, his current relates to the latter. Looking for Secrets in the Fire Emblem: Three Houses Trailer was the first time he’d ever completed an in-depth trailer analysis to discover secrets and make predictions – and he thinks it turned out better than expected!
Finally: it was recently Adventure Rules’ third anniversary, so let’s all wish Ian a happy blogging birthday. 🎂
The challenge
The question set for us by Ian is: You’ve been tasked with making the Ultimate Video Game, but there’s a catch – you can only piece it together from parts of other releases. You can choose separate titles for visual design, sound design, storytelling, and gameplay. What four games would you use to make the Ultimate Video Game?
If you’d like to get involved, publish your answer to Ian’s question at a time that suits you before 27 September 2018 and leave us a link in the comments below. There are no rules on word-limit or format so you can be as creative as you like: write a post, record a video, create a drawing, or impress us with another unique idea.
Our star blogger will then choose their favourite entry and the winner will be announced at the beginning of October. Good luck to everyone who’d like to participate this month!

Oooh I need to get my thinking cap on for this question.
(Also just a little note Kim you say congratulations to Pix1001 and joining in Julys question and I think you mean me and August after the reasons for me being chosen as last month’s winner – sorry to mention)

Argh – I’m so sorry!
*quickly edits post*
That’s what happens when you copy an old post and aren’t paying full attention. Apologies and congratulations. 😳

I figured that was what happened but I thought you might want to know. Thanks!

Once the Ultimate Video Game has been decided, I think we may need to commission you for the artwork. 😉

Just about every video game has at least some elements of other games so this is technically a bit of a trick question. I may still participate in it though.

Now that’s true: even ‘new’ video games display influences from other releases or the developers’ gaming tastes. What I like about this question though is that it has the potential to lend itself to some pretty personal answers from everyone who enters this month. I’m looking forward to getting a glimpse inside everyone’s head! 🙂

https://guardianacorn.com/2018/09/05/how-id-remake-deadly-towers/ I decided to take a few liberties with this and enter a piece I was already working on prior to knowing about this contest, as I find that creating an entry for this contest would give me too many ideas and would thus be overwhelming.

That’s kind of the position I’m in at the moment with my own response. I think I’ve got my answers for the visual, sound and storytelling aspects of the game, but I’m having trouble to just picking one for gameplay. There’s just so much choice…

Hey, welcome to the party! 😀
But damn though… why didn’t I think of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter for visuals in my own answer? That’s such a good choice.

Definitely, I think this QotM has to be one of my favourites out of every challenge we’ve had in the time the series has been going. The next star blogger has just chosen their question for October and it’s perfectly themed for the month!
