GameBlast20: practice makes perfect

Here’s the latest update on our 50-day challenge for GameBlast20, an event starting on Sunday, 05 January 2020 which aims to raise funds and awareness for SpecialEffect. This amazing charity puts fun and inclusion back into the lives of those with physical disabilities by helping everyone to play video games through technology. Find out more on their website or take a look at these posts.

At first, playing video games and streaming them for at least an hour a day for 50-days straight doesn’t seem like a big test. But once you start practicing and realising how adult responsibilities have a habit of getting in the way, you realise how much of a challenge you’re in for! We’re not going to let that put us off however. Over the past month we’ve been trying to go live on Twitch as many evenings as possible and have been working away behind the scenes on the arrangements for GameBlast20.

The streams

I’m thankful to say that Pete and I won’t be attempting the 50-day challenge alone: everybody needs a little help from their friends sometimes and some amazing people have our backs. Phil has volunteered to step in and cover some streams if we need a break or an emergency comes up. Luke from Hundstrasse will be joining us for a few games and bringing his best octopus jokes. And Katie from The Gaming Diaries has offered to spread the word about the event on social media. These guys rock.

If you like the idea of participating in GameBlast20 and showing your support for SpecialEffect but don’t want to do it alone, we’d love to have your on our team! Whether you’re interested in hosting an hour-long stream one day, joining us for a game or two, streaming for 24-hours or helping out with a bit of PR, everybody is welcome here. You can find out more about what we’ve got planned by taking a look at this post and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

The games

Although we’re still a few months away from kicking off the 50-day challenge on in January, we’re starting to think about the video games we should add to our schedule. We’re planning on having a different ‘theme’ for each day of the week to make this task a little easier and you can see what we’ve come up with below. We’d love to hear your suggestions for the titles that should be included in each category – leave your thoughts in the comments below or send us a tweet!

  • Indie Mondays
  • ESO Tuesdays
  • All-Action Wednesdays
  • Game Pass Thursdays
  • Retro Fridays
  • Kim’s Choice Saturdays
  • Pete’s Choice Sundays

  • Other activities

We don’t just play video games in support of SpecialEffect here at Later Levels. Sometimes we put down the controller and get outside so Phil and I are taking part in next year’s ASICS London 10k event too. Training began at the end of August and the intensity of our runs is gradually increasing, with each session taking us between four and five kilometres in distance right now. Keep up-to-date on our progress by checking out my photos on Instagram and our running playlist on YouTube.

Before that though, I’ll be helping out on the charity’s stand at MCM Comic Con London so please do come and say hello if you’re there on Friday, 25 October 2019! I’ve been volunteering for SpecialEffect for around six years now and have loved every moment of it. You can find out what it’s like in these posts and if it seems like something you’d enjoy yourself, get in touch with Becky Frost at info@specialeffect.org.uk. You can also check out our interview with this lovely lady here.

That’s all for this update! More news will be coming at the beginning of November and in the meantime, come join us over on Twitch one evening.
