Gamers’ Blog Party: spring 2023 invitation

Spring is almost here, and warmer weather is on the horizon.

The anticipation of the first barbecue of the year, days out in the bright sunshine and far too much chocolate over a long Easter weekend is hanging in the air. Before we enjoy those events though, how about another Gamers’ Blog Party?

These started back in 2018 but it’s been a while since I’ve hosted one, so let me explain for those who have never heard of them before. They’re a great way to meet other bloggers in the community, find some new blogs to add to your reading schedule and let others know about your own site too. All gaming bloggers are invited to join in, and the rules are simple:

  • Arrive at the party: don’t be shy and stand alone in the corner, come and say hello and introduce yourself in the comments below! Give us an overview of your blog to welcome new readers and let us know what you’re all about.
  • Present your gift: think about the posts you’ve written over the past three months and choose your favourite, or one which was fun to write. Leave a link to it in your comment so we can check it out and explain why you picked it.
  • Get the conversation going: start the discussion by letting us know what you’re playing right now, the game you’re most looking forward to in 2023, and what you’ll be playing for #MaybeInMarch if you’re going to participate.
  • Be sociable: put on a party hat, grab yourself a controller and get you know your fellow blog party guests. Check back on new comments throughout the day to discover excellent sites and make some new blogging friends.
  • Party all day: the comments below will be open for 24-hours until 06:00 GMT on Tuesday, 07 March 2023 so you’ve got plenty of time to meet and greet. I’ll also be sharing your posts on the Later Levels’ Twitter account during the day.

These blog party events are my way of giving something back to the amazing WordPress community and showing my appreciation for everyone’s support. I’ve had the opportunity to meet some lovely people and talented writers since I started blogging around ten years ago. So here’s a little thank you and a way of finding some awesome blogs you may not have come across already.

The record was set at the Gamers’ Blog Party in summer 2019, when 36 articles and 348 comments were shared. It’s a tough challenge but maybe we’ll be able to beat that again? Have fun – and excuse me while I top up everyone’s drinks and turn the music up a little louder.

Hello! It’s good to see this back!
I’m Nana, blogger for mostly JRPGs, racing games, Japanese indie games, and anime, plus whatever else tickles my fancy. Honestly my 2023 is probably going to be me getting through my backlog, since I’m not particularlly, but I don’t think I’ll be participating in maybeinmarch.

As for stuff a gift I recently did a review of Lightning Returns, and I love it dearly: https://nmarfoblogs.wordpress.com/2023/01/27/lightning-returns-final-fantasy-xiii-review/

    Hope everyone enjoys!

XIII is the only Final Fantasy game I’ve ever completed. The genre isn’t really my cup of tea so I can’t see myself picking up the sequels, but I can understand the appeal. 🙂

Sounds like a lot of people are planning to work on their backlogs this year, I wish you the best of luck with it!

    Morning Kim! Or afternoon? Whichever.

For those that don’t already know me: hi, I go by Frostilyte, or just Frosti in online circles. I write about video games. Which…yeah that’s a pretty broad topic, but I don’t really have any clear genre of focus, and never have over the past 6 years of writing. Just as an example, last month I covered 4 different titles, across 4 genres. Faeria – a collectable card game, Hi-Fi Rush – a rhythm action title, Potion Craft – a game entirely about crafting, and Signalis – a ps2-era inspired survival-horror title. So, if a diverse range of topics is your cup of tea, then I’d love to have you onboard. If not, I totally get that too.

As for what I’m looking forward to in 2023: Street Fighter 6. It wasn’t on my radar at all, until recently. The different character reveal trailers did wonders for getting my interested in the game. It also helps that I found a character that I’m interested in playing, so I’m looking forward to being able to dig into it this coming June.

With regard to #MaybeInMarch: Rollerdrome. I should have started it already, but…I haven’t. I do have the whole last week of March off though, so, worst case, I know I can squeeze it in right at the tail end of the month hahaha.

As for the gift, here’s the article I wrote about that aforementioned rhythm action title Hi-Fi Rush:
    http://frostilyte.ca/2023/02/08/hi-fi-rush-is-fun-even-if-you-suck-at-rhythm-games/
It’s a title that goes to extreme lengths to make sure that everyone can enjoy it regardless of their rhythmic abilities.

Ok – I think that’s it for me. I’ll be checking in periodically throughout the day. Bit of a stacked day at work today.

Hi Fi Rush did just seem like a pretty good game visually, so I’ll try and check it out at some point I think.

If you’re an existing gamepass sub then it’s right there. Hope you enjoy it if/when you check it out. 🙂

May have to give this a try, not a game that would normally be on my radar but been enjoying some of the shorter 8-10 hour games on GP so in the spirit of broadening horizons, seems like a fun blast to experience.

          • Frostilyte

Hi-Fi Rush definitely fits the bill then. I hope you end up enjoying it. Game feels like it was a bit of a sleeper hit so far this year. Need to convince more folks to give it a go.

A couple of people at work have said good things about Rollerdrome, so looking forward to reading about what you make of it. I haven’t started my #MaybeInMarch entry either, so you’re not alone in that! 😆

Well that’s a relief. But did you also start a second playthrough of Elden Ring recently for reasons that don’t even make sense to yourself? Asking for a friend…

You’re joking, right? While I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching a friend play Elden Ring and can appreciate the design, there’s no way I’m putting myself under that kind of pressure! ha ha

I didn’t play a lot of SFV and wasn’t super into it when I did, but SF6 is looking pretty good so far…

Which character you gonna be playing??

      • Frostilyte

I’ve never played a Street Fighter, but I’ve been doing a lot of my fighting game growth over the past several years during the SF5 era. Street Fighter 5 had such a botched launch that I just had no interest in checking it out. 6 seems to be hitting all the right notes though. Plus I have some friends from GG Strive that’ll be playing it, so I can just continue playing them in our legendary 3 hour Friday night beatdowns if all else fails.

Manon. I’m not big on grapplers because they’re usually so bulky, and slow. That said, I love throwing people because it pisses them off sooooo much. Manon looks like she has some goblin technology with how she combos into her command throws, and her movement doesn’t look as slow as Marissa, and Zangeif’s more typical grappler trudge.

What about you? Betting you’ve got a main scoped out too, yeah?

        • Gaming Omnivore

I lived for Street Fighter 2 back in the Genesis/SNES days, but that launch for SF5 was pretty rough…

I don’t typically use many grapple fighters either. I’d occasionally play as Zangief as a kid, but that’s about it.

I’ve always been a Guile main…which seems fitting that I’d be set on making matches harder for myself than they probably need to be because I was set on using a charge character.

          • Frostilyte

Are…charge characters typically considered more difficult to play? I know the charge time in GG is almost nothing (30f), but I found doing 46 and 28 charges way easier than doing a quarter circle with my arcade stick lol

            • Gaming Omnivore

I remember hearing that back during the SF4 days, but it could also be largely personal preference? I always felt like spamming fireballs and hurricane kicks with Ken was much easier than being more precise about when to attempt a flash kick with Guile…idk

Hi everyone, My name is Ty and my blog is about point and click games. So far I’ve mainly played games from a specific company(and a specific time period), but once I’m done with that, who knows what I’ll do… maybe I’ll talk about some other genres as well.

The post I’m most proud of so far is my Her Story/Telling Lies post (https://tygamearchive.wordpress.com/2023/01/30/her-story-telling-lies-double-feature/). I wasn’t planning to talk about these games at all, but I think it came out really well. I also have a review scheduled for next week which I’m also pretty excited to post. I think both reviews show some improvement in how I write reviews.

I look forward to reading everyone else’s comments and posts!

Hi Ty, lovely to meet you! It’s always nice to meet a fellow point-and-click fan. Do you have a favourite? 🙂

I’m a massive FMV fan so I jumped on Her Story and Telling Lies as soon as I could. I’m in agreement: I enjoyed both but think Her Story is slightly better. Have you tried Immortality yet?

      • Ty

Hi Kim, nice to meet you too! Sorry for the late reply. It’s so hard to pick a favourite, there are so many great games to choose from. If I had to pick a couple examples though, they would be The Telltale Walking Dead games, Cognition, Lamplight City and Unavowed. What are yours?

I haven’t gotten around to playing Immortality yet, but I have heard it’s good. It takes me a while to get around to playing newer games, but hopefully I’ll play it sooner rather than later.

        • Kim

You just said Cognition?! Everyone I mention this game to has never heard of it before and I absolutely love it. Erica is such a great character. Unavowed is also an excellent choice – really nice mix of point-and-click and RPG. You can’t beat a Wadget Eye release. 😀

I guess I’m legally required (ha ha) to say that the Monkey Island series is my favourite as it was the first I played as a kid. I’m currently playing Black Dahlia, one I bought when it was released in the 1990s but never actually finished.

Immortality is really good! Definitely one to try if you liked Her Story and Telling Lies, although different in terms of gameplay.

          • Ty

Cognition is so fun! it’s kinda rough around the edges in some places, but when it’s good it’s REALLY good.

I think I’ve heard of the Black Dahlia game, how is it?

            • Kim

It’s definitely a game of its time, if you know what I mean? There are certain parts of the writing and puzzle design that feel a little outdated now. But I’m still really enjoying it for the nostalgia factor, plus I love a good story featuring a detective. 🙂

    Hello. My name is Elise.

I write about video games in general, but I tend to write from a very sentimental viewpoint. Nothing fancy. I play games of pretty much every single genre except sports. My blog is focused on looking at the positive aspects and experiences games can give us.

Sometimes if I’m feeling up to it I will do a Deep Dive and do some research. Since these take more time I’m biased towards thinking they’re a good post:
    http://gamepraisers.com/2023/01/24/comparison-the-meta-boss/
This one is about the need to compare ourselves to other players.

Unfortunately, starting the beginning of this year some very disruptive life events have occurred and I haven’t been able to post as much as I usually do. I apologize for the lack of content lately. I look forward to seeing everyone else’s content.

Hey, there’s nothing to apologise for! Sometimes you’ve just got to focus on real-life and the blog will always be there waiting for you when your ready. I hope everything calms down for you soon and am sending positive vibes. 🙂

Hi, I’m Skylar-Mei! I write mainly about video games (of all genres) but I also include posts about music and anime from time to time too. I’ve recently got back into blogging this year and have just celebrated the 6th anniversary of my blog.

I’m currently playing ‘Castlevania: Symphony of the Night’, ‘NieR:Automata’ and ‘Birushana: Rising Flower of Genpei’, and I’m hoping to start ‘American McGee’s Alice’ for #MaybeInMarch once I finish Castlevania (I’m just hunting for those last few achievements)! I plan to focus on my backlog this year, but I am looking forward to the releases of ‘Virche Evermore -Error: Salvation-‘ and ‘Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE’.

The post I would like to share is my ‘Top 11 Games of 2022’ list. I spent a lot of time writing this list and although I may be quite critical about a few games here, I strongly recommend my top 2 picks to everyone – they’re both absolute gems that definitely deserve more recognition! https://gamergalexe.wordpress.com/2023/02/25/top-11-games-of-2022/

Thanks, Kim, for hosting another Blog Party – it’s great to see it back! 🎉

So many people have recommended Pentiment, but I still don’t know anything about it. I note though that you recommend going into it this way so I might give it a go! Just need to get through my #MaybeInMarch game first. 🙂

I definitely recommend going it to it knowing as little about the plot as possible! I was really surprised at how much of an impact every choice makes and I’m looking forward to starting another playthrough myself to see how much each choice really does impact the storyline. I’d be very interested in hearing your thoughts if you do get around to giving it a go 😁

The art-style put me off a little when I first heard about it, but it seems to have made the top of a lot of players’ lists. I really don’t know anything at all about it though; is it like a visual novel?

          • Skylar-Mei

I can see why the art style may put you off, but it’s actually perfect for the setting! It’s definitely a narrative driven game with a lot of reading involved but I wouldn’t define it as a visual novel. I guess it kind of plays like a point and click, but there aren’t exactly any puzzles – it’s more about questioning people to collect evidence 🤔 You can move Andreas wherever you want across town to pursue whichever “lead” you fancy which is where the choices come into play, but it’s really clever how they’ve done it!

            • Kim

Like a point-and-click where you collect evidence? Two of my favourite things in video games! Looks like it’s free on Game Pass at the moment so it seems like the perfect time to give it a try. Thanks for the details!

I love Symphony of the Night! I played it a few years back and instantly regretted not getting around to it sooner. My favorite game in the series along with Castlevania 3.

      • Skylar-Mei

It really is an excellent game! It’s one of my boyfriend’s all time favourite games and he’s been trying to get me to play it for ages. Since he recommended Sekiro last year, which I absolutely loved, I knew I should give SotN a try and now I can really see why it’s a favourite of his. It’s the first Castlevania game I’ve played, but I hope to try some more in the future, probably starting with Rondo of Blood (since I already own it) 🤔

        • Gaming Omnivore

A classic that helped spawn an entire sub-genre alongside Super Metroid. I’ve never actually played Rondo of Blood despite having that too(I’m guessing Castlevania: Requiem is how you played it as well?)

          • Skylar-Mei

Definitely, and now I’m pleased I can say I’ve played such a classic! Yes, you’re correct, I played it as part of Castlevania: Requiem which I bought mainly to play Symphony of the Night! It seems a shame not to try Rondo of Blood now since it’s sat there waiting 😁

Thanks! I’ve heard it’s great but I had to go through a few hoops to be able to get it to run 😅 It’s unavailable to buy anywhere anymore – that’s probably why it’s not mentioned much… it’s such a shame when games end up like this 😔

Hi, I’m GD and I occasionally blog about games just generally and sometimes other geeky topics. I like quite a variety of genres so a random assortment of games get mentioned when I have the time/energy to write about them. My blog has been a bit quiet over the last year but I’m hoping to get back into a routine with it. I love knowing its there when I’m able to do stuff with it.

I’m currently playing Beyond: Two Souls with a bit of Powerwash Simulator when I just want to relax and not think about doing QTEs.

I’m trying to clear a bit off my backlog this year but I’m also looking forward to FF16 later this year.

For my gift I bring my new personal challenge for the next however long it takes (probably a long time!). However it is giving me a long term goal and hopefully the little push to get things played that have sat there for a bit longer.
    https://gamingdiaries.co.uk/2023/02/27/plati-alphabet/

Thanks for organising and bring the blog parties back Kim! 😁

    • Kim

You’re so brave, doing this platinum challenge. The thought alone scares me ha ha! Although… reading your post the other day did give me an idea for another kind of alphabet project, so there might be some more news about that coming soon. Thanks for the inspiration!

      • thegamingdiaries

I’m hoping (though I didn’t check and probably should have) that none are too difficult. If nothing else I can finish these and change a letter to an easier platinum if something is too difficult as some letters had a few options. I think my toughest will probably be Uncharted Lost Legacy but I’ve done the hardest trophy already so everything else should just take time to practice or collect. Though some are probably longer and more of a grind which I’d prefer over difficult.

Ooh very interested to see what your alphabet project is. I’ll look forward to reading about that.

  • Gaming Omnivore

    Hey there! It’s been a minute since I’ve done a proper introduction…

I’m Nathan and I primarily write about video games, but will venture into other areas from time to time. I’ve been blogging for just over four years now, and while I maybe haven’t been as consistent as of late, I do still enjoy it greatly. Gaming-wise, I typically play a bit of everything(‘Omnivore’) and am always open to different genres and titles. The past year or so I’ve spent a *lot* of time playing From Software games, so I’ve been attempting to focus on other types of games lately.

As for #MaybeInMarch, one of the games that’s been in my backlog for literally a couple decades now is The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. I’ve played the game here and there since it was released back in 2003, but have never completed it. My main quest for this month is to complete the game sometime before the 20th anniversary of its (North American)release. Outside of that I’ve been continuing my way through Persona 5 Royal, another game that’s perpetually in the “gonna finish this year” pile.

There’s actually a few games I’m looking forward to this year! The immediate choice is the Resident Evil 4 Remake as RE4 has been one of my top 3 favorite games since first playing it. I’m also really looking forward to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in May and then Street Fighter 6 this summer. I played countless hours of Street Fighter IV back on the Xbox 360 and have been pretty excited for SF6 from what we’ve been shown so far…

For my “contribution” to the blog party…I haven’t posted a ton in the past couple months, and *of course* it’s about Dark Souls, so here’s my post where I attempt to explain my disdain for one of the game’s infamously bad boss fights – Bed of Chaos. Cheers!

Are you playing the original release of Wind Waker, or are you playing the *much* improved HD re-release on the Wii U? It should be clear which version of the game I like better, but both are good. Just that the Gamecube one feels a little dated, and is bogged down by a pretty sub-par run up to the ending.

Also, didn’t think to ask this when you asked about who I was going to main in SF6: do you know if it’ll have crossplay? If it does, we’ll have to play sometime 😛

    • charlesfwh

Ahh Resident Evil 4, remember playing that back in the 00’s on the ‘cube with the chainsaw controller. For about 5 minutes before switching back to the normal controller. That was a nightmare to use but looked fun.

      • Gaming Omnivore

I *wish* I would have just bought the chainsaw controller back then! It’s become much more expensive now 18 years later.

Is it the most intuitive way to play RE4? Nope. Did I care? Also, no

        • charlesfwh

It was definitely a talking point, also how each consoles version had a colour variation. Appreciated the yellow cube style but was impractical to hold. Fun, but did cramp the hands in short order!

I’ve never really had the opportunity to play a Zelda game, but I’ve always wanted to try one. I like that you’ve set yourself a goal to finish it before the 20th anniversary – hopefully that will encourage you to check it off the backlog list! Persona 5 is another game I’ve always wanted to play, but again, I find the series quite daunting to get into which has now been reinforced by your time-frame to finish it 😅

      • Gaming Omnivore

Nintendo has been a little better about making Zelda games more widely available as of late, though I know there’s plenty of people out there that would love to see that Wind Waker/Twilight Princess HD collection get ported to the Switch. Nintendo *could* capitalize on Tears of the Kingdom being released in just 67 days.

I actually started playing the base Persona 5 back in 2019 and then got distracted by other games in the meantime, before deciding I’d maybe just wait and play P5 Royal after hearing it streamlined a few things. It’s since become a running joke(among me, myself and I) that “I’ll actually finish Persona 5 this year!”

        • Skylar-Mei

Nintendo could potentially make so much money by releasing the Zelda games on Switch. I’m honestly surprised they haven’t done so already. There’s so many games though that I wouldn’t even know where to start!
That’s brilliant that you have a running joke with Persona 5! I actually have a similar one – the reason I bought my PS4 was just so I could play both Persona 5 and Bloodborne… It’s been 5 years now and I’ve never even started either of these 🤣 Hopefully you will finish Persona 5 this year though! Good luck! 😀

Oh wow, The Wind Waker is a blast from the past for me. Although I haven’t finished it either, I remember spending many hours playing it with Ethan when he was a lot younger while Pete was at work. It was one of the games that kicked off his fascination with Link back then… until we told him he’d have to wear tights if he wanted to cosplay as him at Comic Con. 😉

Sounds like you’ve got a lot on the to-do list, looking forward to hearing your thoughts about these games!

Lol. Probably weren’t gonna be able to talk Pete into that one either, huh?

I’ve become pretty adept at *sounding* ambitious…it’s just following it up that’s the tricky part!

I think seeing Pete in the Pikachu costume is enough for anyone… 🤣

Hello everyone! I’m George or thegamerwithglasses. I mostly write reviews and first impressions of games I’m playing. Sometimes I have random video game posts that range from a specific game series or listing some of my favorite OSTs from a game. I try to blog at least twice a month.

I am currently playing Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. I had the original game on PSP, but didn’t get anywhere close to finishing it. It’s good to be able to actual get the chance to finish it this time.

There are a lot of good games I’m looking forward to this year. The main one I’m looking forward to is the Mega Man Battle Network Collection. It was an unexpected announcement that I’m excited for. I’ve played a few of the games from the series, but am glad to have all of them in one place.

The post I’d like to share is my review of Pokemon Scarlet. This review is the most recent one that I’ve done and has made me rethink my scoring.

Thanks for having this again! I remember participating in one of the previous ones when I first started blogging.

Thanks for stopping by! It’s been a while since the last blog party, and I thought it would be fun to resurrect them again. 🙂

It’s somehow more exciting when there’s an unexpected announcement about a game you’re looking forward to. I felt the same when I found out about the Monkey Island release last year! I hope the Mega Man collection turns out to be just what you’ve been waiting for.

    Good evening all,

Fashionably late for the party but always nice to see one of these going on. I’m Charles, at the north end of my 30s and write on Comfortably Adventurous about gaming, exhibits and food. Specifically, gluten free foods (damn you aging body!). Used to write with more of a gaming slant but enjoy a broader spectrum in recent years so a little bit of anything and everything with the odd opinionated stance on occasion.

In recent months I’ve been enjoying a few shorter length games which have had more of an emotional resonance as an ‘experience’. The desire to ‘get good’ doesn’t really hold sway so enjoy a more emotionally evocative narrative and style over button bashing. My personal preference. My share for this event is a review on Road 96, interesting dystopian game but a great soundtrack:

For #MaybeInMarch I’m going to be tackling ‘Dante’s Inferno’ it was the first game an old partner invested in when I introduced her to gaming. It looked interesting but for a long time there was a slightly bittersweet feeling on actually playing it. Now, it’s as good as time as any to actually journey through the various circles of hell and banish a few personal ghosts.

So that’s me. Also I travel and take a tonne of photos with a Leeds United teddy bear called ‘Leeds Bear’ Original right??

I’d completely forgotten about Dante’s Inferno until I just read your comment 😅 I started it a few years ago and remember it being fairly good but I don’t remember how far I got with it. Maybe I’ll go back and take a look at it soon 🤔 Hope you have fun with it!

I played the demo for Road 96 a while back and enjoyed it, but haven’t yet tried to full game. I’ll have to give your review a proper read when I’m on a break later! I just scrolled down to the bottom though and saw the rating… sounds like there are a few things it could improve upon?

It’s enjoyable, a little on the nose with politics and some repetition but ‘fun’ overall. Great soundtrack though

I read your review this morning, thanks for the information. It sounds like one I’ll keep on the wishlist for now but perhaps not immediately jump to.

Gahhh I was looking forward to this, but ended up spending an extra long day at work to get a project finished. I hope you all had a good time, and thanks for bringing this back! Hopefully I’ll be on time for the next one *shuffles back to the sofa to play more Horizon*
