hands, keyboard, blogging

Press start

One day back in February 2013, Kim cam across a book which listed the top 1,001 video games released between 1971 and 2010. And after a conversation with a couple of friends in the pub the following evening, she thought: wouldn’t it be great if we could do just that?

Then she realised how completely unrealistic that was. And how writing an introduction in the third-person was a really bad idea.

Later Levels originally started as an attempt to review all those games, then gradually evolved into something far more laidback and varied. A full-time job in IT, crazy family life and other adult responsibilities keep me busy nowadays, but I still manage to fit in a few hours for blogging each week.

Inventory: what you’ll find here

Later Levels has been a project of love, point-and-clicks and ice-cream since it began in 2013. Its focus back then was solely on video games, but this has expanded over the years to cover the following:

  • Adventure games – my favourite video game genre
  • Inclusion through technology – my voluntary work for SpecialEffect
  • Running – progress towards my latest milestone
  • ITIL and DevOps – hot topics in my day-job
  • Data science – my experience of being a Data Fellowship apprentice

There’s no set schedule and new articles will be published whenever there’s something I’d like to share. Visit the Get in touch page to contact me if there’s anything you’d like to chat about or if you’re selling fine leather jackets.

Protagonist: meet the blogger

I’ve had a thing for wannabe pirates and point-and-clicks since finding The Secret of Monkey Island on my Amiga as a kid in the 1990s. Adventures have held a special place in my heart since and no matter how much the genre changes over the years, there’s nothing I like better than a good story.

In the real world, I work with best practice and service quality for an IT department in higher-education and am in the middle of completing a Data Fellowship apprenticeship too. That means I’ve often got my head stuck in a process diagram, SQL script or spreadsheet.

When I’m at home and not on my laptop, you can usually find me in the kitchen cooking something with far too much chilli or sugar in it. I’m also a regular runner (although not necessarily a good one) and am often outside somewhere training in preparation for the next running event.

My husband Pete and I have supported SpecialEffect for a long time now, and you might bump into us at one of the UK gaming expos as we regularly volunteer at these for the charity. We also take part in the annual GameBlast marathon every February along with casual streams, during which my stepson Ethan and cat Zelda sometimes make an appearance.

Head over to the FAQ page if you’re interested in finding out more, and contact me using the details on the Get in touch page if you have a question which isn’t answered there.
